Industrial power plant development site 60 miles northeast of Austin Texas

A new 1,200 MW natural gas-fired power plant is being built 60 miles northeast of Austin, Texas.

The facility will sit on a 33,000 acre site that was the location of the former Alcoa coal-fired aluminum smelting plant.

It’s expected to be complete in 2028 and will bring roughly 1000 jobs into the region during construction. It will be owned and operated by the Sandow Lakes Energy Company, which is based in Dallas.

This is yet another example of industrial site redevelopment in response to growing electricity demand. Already, there are other projects planned for the site, including a 3,300 acre manufacturing facility. One of the first tenants will be T1 Energy Inc., which will operate a solar cell factory.
